What is Graphic Design?

Graphic design is the art of using visual communication to convey messages. It’s an interdisciplinary field that combines art and design principles with technical skills. Graphic designers, also referred to as graphic artists or communication designers, combine art and technology to communicate ideas through images and the layout of websites and printed pages. They may use a variety of design elements to achieve artistic or decorative effects.

Occupations

Occupations within the graphic design field can include many different positions, such as concept artist, creative director, art director, art production manager, brand identity developer, broadcast designer, logo designer, marketing designer, illustrator, visual image developer, multimedia developer, content developer, visual journalist, layout artist, interface designer, web designer, package designer, etc.

Salaries & Job Outlook

The median annual salary for graphic designers in the US was $58,910 in May 2023, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The lowest 10% of graphic designers earned less than $36,420, and the highest 10% earned more than $100,450. Industry, experience, and location can factor in when it comes to determining a graphic designer’s salary. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for graphic designers is projected to grow at a slower than average rate, with a projected growth of around 2-3% through 2033, meaning while there will be job openings, the number of new positions may not be significant compared to other occupations. However, there will still be a steady demand for graphic designers due to the need to replace retiring workers or those transitioning to different careers.

Inspirations

One graphic designer that I take inspiration from is Will Bryant. Will Bryant is a professional artist, designer, and illustrator and is mostly known for his bright, vibrant, 90s like aesthetic artwork. He dabbles in a wide variety of different mediums, such as paintings and digital art, but he mostly specializes in digital art. Will Bryant’s art has appeared in famous brands like Adidas, Nike, Facebook, Nickelodeon, New York Times, and Target. He has also donated pieces to fundraisers, and has given many lectures and speeches, where he further influenced people with his famous messages of fun, which is a major motivator behind all of his works. He is considered as “a visual icon in one of the world’s most famous cities for art and culture” and several different brands and artists were influenced by his whimsical, bright, and playful art style, as he’s been recognized by Print Magazine and even Adobe. I take inspiration from Will Bryant not only because of his fame and recognition, but also because of his art style and his themes of fun behind his work.

Another graphic designer I take inspiration from is Ivan Chermayeff. Ivan Chermayeff was mostly recognized for his logo design, but he has also made other various works of art such as sculptures and posters. The thing that made Ivan’s artwork most popular was that his logo designs were clean, neat, and recognizable. Many of the graphic art pieces that he made “showed a perfect balance of abstract geometric shapes and figurative images”. The reason why I like Ivan Chermayeff is not only because of his clean and crisp logo designs, but also because that he helped create some of the most iconic corporate logos that we are familiar with today, like Chase Bank, PBS, NBC, National Geographic, and many others.
