What is Graphic Design?

Graphic design is the art of using visual communication to convey messages. It’s an interdisciplinary field that combines art and design principles with technical skills. Graphic designers, also referred to as graphic artists or communication designers, combine art and technology to communicate ideas through images and the layout of websites and printed pages. They may use a variety of design elements to achieve artistic or decorative effects.

Occupations

Occupations within the graphic design field can include many different positions, such as concept artist, creative director, art director, art production manager, brand identity developer, broadcast designer, logo designer, marketing designer, illustrator, visual image developer, multimedia developer, content developer, visual journalist, layout artist, interface designer, web designer, package designer, etc.

Salaries & Job Outlook

The median annual salary for graphic designers in the US was $58,910 in May 2023, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The lowest 10% of graphic designers earned less than $36,420, and the highest 10% earned more than $100,450. Industry, experience, and location can factor in when it comes to determining a graphic designer’s salary. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for graphic designers is projected to grow at a slower than average rate, with a projected growth of around 2-3% through 2033, meaning while there will be job openings, the number of new positions may not be significant compared to other occupations. However, there will still be a steady demand for graphic designers due to the need to replace retiring workers or those transitioning to different careers.

Career

Career Goals & Aspirations

I wish to become a concept artist for existing video game companies like Steel Wool Studios and HoYoverse, or upcoming and future indie game companies. I also wouldn’t mind being a concept artist for any anime companies. My ultimate career goal is to become an exceptional graphic designer and concept artist to have my visions and art recognized globally.

Favorite Designers/Studios

My top favorite studios are Steel Wool Studios and HoYoverse. Both of these are video game studios that are responsible for creating my top favorite video games, which is why I like them so much. Another designer, or technically an indie game developer, that I also like is Scott Cawthon, as he is the creator of the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise, who then handed it over to Steel Wool Studios. Scott Cawthon was able to create the first four games in the series by himself, the concept art, video game assets, coding, and everything, which is why I admire him.

Favorite Design Related Websites

One of my favorite design related websites is Pinterest. Pinterest is a popular social media platform that allows users to discover and save ideas for their various projects. While Pinterest is often associated with recipes, fashion, and home decor, it’s also a surprisingly valuable resource for web design inspiration. When in the early stages of a project, Pinterest is incredibly helpful for gathering a diverse range of design ideas. Beyond web design, you can also explore branding, print design, stationery, typography, color palettes, and even photography all in one place. I personally like Pinterest because it has a wide variety of art you can find to use as inspiration for my own designs and ideas, and I also like to browse all the different kinds of artwork that people like to post. Instagram is another one of my favorite design related websites. While Instagram is a social media platform that is primarily designed for photo sharing, it can be used to find inspiration for other design related ideas just like Pinterest. Additionally, I personally prefer to use it browse for artworks to use as inspiration, or just to browse artworks in general. Squarespace is another good design related website that I consider to be one of my well liked design related websites. Squarespace is a website building and hosting website, pretty similar to WordPress. It provides software as a service for website building and hosting, and allows users to use pre-built website templates and drag-and-drop elements to create and modify webpages. It’s pretty simple, standard, and great for designing your own websites, which is why I hold it in high regards.
